Eating Healthy Can Cause Stomach Swelling
So recently I’ve been having some issues with my stomach swelling up several inches after eating. I will go from looking totally normal to looking 6 months pregnant just minutes after eating.
I’ve done extensive research on the topic and the only results that kept coming up were things such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance (I already only drink soy milk), and several other issues that seemed too extreme for just my intense stomach swelling.
I couldn’t find any answers until now, which is ironic because I found this article right after emailing my doctor.
Anyways, I found this article that described my symptoms, and finally didn’t declare that I had some sort of disorder. It said, surprisingly, that my new and improved healthy diet may in fact be the problem:
‘Anything “healthy” is often a cause of bloating,’ says Professor Whorwell.
‘High-fibre foods, such as cereals, beans and pulses cause bloating by fermenting in the gut. Don’t force yourself to eat lots of brown bread, bran and vegetables if they are crucifying you.’
Healthy snacks are another problem, adds Luci Daniels.
‘Many people spend all day snacking on large amounts of fresh fruit, nuts and seeds — all of which ferment in the bowel and cause problems in both healthy people and those with irritable bowel syndrome. Edamame beans are notorious for causing bloating, yet people eat them because they’re healthy.’
Dieting can also cause bloating if you stick to a high-protein diet such as the Atkins or Dukan, explains Luci Daniels.
‘Faddy diets don’t help when it comes to bloating,’ she adds.
‘People wonder why they are bloated and constipated, yet they are on a high-protein diet so getting very little fibre, which is what we need to go to the loo regularly.’

Along with this, it also mentioned eating too fast (swallowing too much air) can cause it as well. I’ve always known this was a problem for me. I can inhale a plate of food in five minutes; most of the time I have to sit and wait for my roommate to finish eating because I eat so fast.
So although I’ve changed my diet for what seemed to be the better, I may just be making things worse.
I eat veggies at every meal and eat plenty of fruit. I always make sure to get lots of protein for after workouts. However these good habits may also be the cause for my stomach issues.
So the rest of today I’m going to try something; I’ll only have one salad today, and cut back on my fruit. I already had half a protein shake, so I’m going to save the rest for another day. I’m also going to focus on eating slowly. I’ll report back on how it works out for me later. And when I make the trip home this weekend I’m going to pick up some probiotic supplements and see how those work out for me.
